Reflecting on 2023! How did it go? كيف كانت سنة 2023 بالنسبة لي؟

Hello! My name is Shouq. Recently I have been reflecting on 2023 and everything I have done through it and I wanted to share that in my blog with everyone. So what did I do in 2023?

Reading:

I read six books, based on my record. My goal was five books so I am happy about that! Four were in Japanese and two were in Arabic.

Gardening:

I tried gardening for the second year in a row. This year I had a harvest of 30 super tinny mini tomatoes that I ate. Additionally, 20 tomatoes that got rotten before harvest, and 19 others that got rotten after harvesting. In total, I was able to grow up to 69 tomatoes! For a starter, I think it’s a success! Hopefully next year I can continue gardening and try to grow more variety of stuff!

Japanese language:

I had a goal of passing N1. I took the test in July and December. I did not pass the July one. The December test result is not out yet so fingers crossed!

I started a new method of studying Japanese this year which consists of using flash cards which I did for 172 days and reading Yahoo news articles which I did for 142 days. It also means that I read 142 news articles during 2023 where some of them were short while others were longer. I made no progress in textbooks as I didn’t finish any of the textbooks that I have, sadly. I read my first Japanese novel this year which made me feel great!

Chinese language:

I studied Chinese for 55 days mainly through the Hello Chinese app.

Spanish language:

I did not study Spanish at all during this year, sadly, but I feel like I have watched some stuff in Spanish this year. Hopefully next year I study Spanish more!

Career:

I had a goal of taking the Apple Device Support certification exam which I studied for around 80 days. I eventually did not take the certification exam as it was not that much of a benefit for my career. On the other, I earned a diploma in my work-related field and got a certification in it as well.

Crochet:

I started crocheting as well! Crocheting is a hobby I used to do when I was younger and I would stop and come back to it over the years. This time I feel like I have learned a lot of things and improved my crocheting skills which has been fun and relaxing. I am also exploring different types of patterns and colors.

This was my reflection on 2023 and how it went. A lot of things have happened this year with it’s good or bad. For 2024, I am hoping for a better year with more achievements and things to explore as well!

( Japanese poem )The little bird, the bell, and me 私と小鳥と鈴と 「英語訳」

[Translated script] The little bird, the bell, and me Even with both of my hands open, I still can't fly in the sky, But the little flying bird Can't run as fast on the ground as me. Even if I shake my body, No beautiful sound comes out. But the ringing bell Doesn't know as much songs as me, The bell, the little bird and also me, We are all different, yet we are good. Poet: Misuzu Kaneko Translated by: Shouq A - Q8toy - ショーグ [The script for the poem] 私と小鳥と鈴と 私は両手うをひろげても、 お空はちょっとっも飛べないが。

How to register a legal alias in Japan / 外国人として通称名の登録のやり方

Hey there! I'm Shouq, and I've been living in Japan for almost four years now. I've got a bit of a situation with my middle name on official documents – it's quite long. If you've spent a good amount of time in Japan, you'll know that dealing with a middle name here can be a hassle, especially if it's a really long one. It messes up online forms, and I've even been rejected for credit cards because my identity couldn't be confirmed due to the mismatch between cards with and without my middle name. Recently, I found out about something called a "通称名" (tsuushoumei), which is like a legal alias you can register in Japan. This can help solve the middle name issue. You can register a simplified name without your middle name or even use your spouse's last name if you're married. I know some foreign residents here who prefer using their middle name as their first name just because it's easier to pronounce – you can get that registered...
